The Osseo School Board will meet tonight at 8 p.m. for its regular school board meeting at the Educational Service Center.
Chickens and their fowl friends got a break at a New Hope City Council work session Aug. 17. The council agreed to uphold its current ordinance regarding the keeping of fowl in residential areas. The issue was brought to light when two residents told the city they are keeping chickens and would like to continue to do so. The number of fowl will be restricted to three per household, unless homeowners apply for a permit, pay a $75 fee and undergo periodic inspections by the city. In order to keep more than three fowl, neighbors living within 350 feet of the property where they are to be kept must approve. The council decided roosters would be not allowed.
Determined, dedicated and high energy were just a few of the positive responses Brooklyn Center School District Superintendent Keith Lester received from a recent job performance evaluation.
With very few exceptions, Lester received three’s, but even more fours and fives by a two to one ratio, Brooklyn Center School Board Chairperson Cheryl Jechorek said. She said the isolated lower marks were for areas that continue to be a struggle for our district, mostly due to financial constraints and our statutory operating debt status.
More than 65 Brooklyn Park children took to the shores of the Mississippi River Aug. 13 as part of the first Cops-n-Kids Fishing Tournament. Despite temperatures reaching near 90 degrees at River Park, Brooklyn Park police officers traded their uniforms for T-shirts and shorts and helped the some of the city’s youth learn the basics of fishing. Each child was assigned to an officer who taught it the basics of fishing. At the end of the event, there was an awards ceremony where kids received prizes for biggest fish. As part of the event, each child received a rod, reel and tackle box to take home, which was donated by Target. Before the fishing festivities took place, Cabela’s, Godfathers Pizza and Dairy Queen served lunch. Organizers hope to bring back the Cops-n-Kids Fishing Tournament next year, opening it up to more youth.

A one-minute visit to “Gateway Arch Tour” at Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, Missouri. To learn more, visit www.nps.gov/jeff. For books and DVDs, visit www.jnpa.com.
The Arch towers 630 feet above the Mississippi River and is a symbol of St. Louis’ role in the nations westward expansion. Under the Arch is the Museum of Westward Expansion where animated exhibits tell the story in the words of those whose lives shaped the American West, from the Louisiana Purchase to the closing of the frontier in 1890.
While the West was being settled, the issue of slavery was not. Here at the Old Courthouse, Dred Scott successfully sued for his freedom in 1850. Unfortunately, for millions of African-Americans, freedom wouldn’t come until after the American Civil War.
In 1948, Architect Eero Saarinen won a national contest held to determine the design of the memorial. Over 5,000 tons of steel were used to build the triangular shaped arch. The entire surface of the Arch is stainless steel plates.
