Cities across the QCA are building berms, filling sandbags and calling for volunteers after the National Weather Service sounds the warning that we could see water levels near what we saw two years ago and back in 1993.
In Davenport, city crews aren’t taking any chances. Though the NWS is forecasting the Mississippi at Davenport to crest at 20 feet, Saturday afternoon crews began building a berm to protect from 24 feet of flooding.
The berms are going up on River Drive, around Union Station, and Modern Woodmen Park. Crews wanted to get them in place quickly because the water is moving fast downstream and rising steadily. They are hoping the extra protection will pay off when the crest happens.
“We are currently preparing all of our flood fighting to 24 feet to account for wave action and water currents and substance in front of berm themselves,” said Michael Clarke, Davenport Public Works Director.
All vehicles below 2nd Street in Davenport are to be moved immediately because of the rising water. The city will tow vehicles at no expense to the owner. Property owners in low lying areas are also being encourages to prepare for a flood. The river is expected to crest in the Quad Cities mid-to-late Tuesday.
