On Saturday 20 August The American Club of Auckland gathered talented Americans and New Zealanders to showcase some of the rich cultural history of the Mississippi River. The Museum’s atrium came alive with the sounds of America’s southern states with jazz, blues and a dose of country putting the crowds in mind of the great Mississippi. Visitors also enjoyed modern dance, Irish clog dancing and readings from American literature. Reporting on flooding along the Mississippi River and how it could affect people in many ways.
For a more contextual perspective on the flooding, I like this fine feature report by CNN’s Martin Savidge. It links the history of U.S. Highway 61 with the Mississippi River and much of the society wrapped around the two. Savidge stayed dry the entire time.

Experience Victorian life during the 19th century as you visit the estate of one of Wisconsin’s most prosperous families.
In the mid-1840s, the Dousman family began developing an estate on the banks of the Mississippi River at Prairie du Chien that would evolve into Villa Louis.
The immaculately decorated mansion is one of the best restoration examples in the country. The mansion’s collection of decorative arts is continually changing based on the current season or special event.
A visit includes a costumed interpreter-led tour of the house, Wisconsin’s sole 1812 battlefield, the historic remains of the site’s original structure, Fort Crawford, and a National Landmark fur trade museum.
