A 15-mile stretch of the swollen Mississippi River, closed Tuesday due to pressure on levees, has been reopened to barges moving one at a time. Tom Bearden reports on the short- and long-term environmental effects the floodwater could have on Lake Pontchartrain, oyster beds and more.

One step closer to the beginning of our journey, a few things need to be taken care of before we leave for our trip down Old Man River.
Starting in Minneapolis Minnesota, I meet up with my brothers Dan (http://www.twitter.com/danbragiel) and Paul (http://www.twitter.com/bragiel).
From there, we grab a moving truck and haul our canoes up to the headwaters of the Mississippi River where we regroup, organize and leave the following day.
The trip has officially begun!

View from the bluff just south of Wickliffe, KY looking toward the confluence of the Ohio River. Can barely see Cairo in the distance toward the end of the clip. Ohio River stage was just inches below the record 1937 flood. I believe the barges are the ones carrying the explosives to blow the Birds Point levee.

The Mississippi River continues to rise, so much so that its tributaries are starting to flow backwards. At Tom Lee Park, preps for Memphis in May continue knowing that the worst is still yet to come.
It’s a site not often seen; the Wolf River and Nonconnah Creek are flowing backwards. The swelling river cannot take on much more water. The tributaries flowing backwards are a big problem for the adjacent communities
