After leaving the headwaters, it’s time to cross a group of lakes. First stop is Lake Bemidji. From there, we approach the most northern point of the river and then arrive to our first major portage around a dam. This episode is ALL ABOUT LAKES! We end it by paddling through the 5th largest lake in Minnesota, Lake WInnibigoshish!

Memphis, Tennessee, Thursday, May 5, 2011: The Mississippi River at Memphis about 10 feet above its 34 foot flood stage, well out of its banks on the Arkansas side. On the Tennessee side, the river level is high around the south end of Mud Island, and well above its banks at Tom Lee Park.
The harbor boat “James T” goes downriver to help the 6,200 horsepower towboat “Cairo” pushing barges north against heavy currents. The motor vessel “James T” reaches the “Cairo” just south of the Interstate Highway 55 Bridge.

The Twilight Riverboat passing Clinton, Iowa’s riverfront at approx 10:30am on 09.13.09. For some reason they weren’t playing it’s Calliope music. You can hear it here: http://www.steamboats.org/whistle-calliope/calliope-twilight.html
From www.steamboats.org:
The Twilight was designed by Capt. Dennis Trone (see also Julia Belle Swain) in the style of the great old passenger boats. The boat was built by Levac Shipyard in Jennings, LA, and finished by Dennis Trone in 1987 in LeClaire, IA. The construction shows how much Dennis Trone loves these wonderful boats. Unfortunately the boat isn’t run by paddlewheels but by a diesel engine and propellers.
Based in LeClaire, IA, the Twilight offers 2-day-cruises from May til October from LeClaire to Galena, IL, and return (reservations 800-331-1467).

Check out my musical journey over the Morganza Spillway on May 16, 2011. At the time of this filming, 9 of the 125 gates are open. According to Wikipedia, The Morganza Spillway, a 3,900-foot (1,200 m) controlled spillway using a set of flood gates to control the volume of water entering the Morganza Floodway from the Mississippi River, consists of a concrete weir, two sluice gates, seventeen scour indicators, and 125 gated openings which can allow up to 600,000 cubic feet per second (17,000 m3/s) of water to be diverted from the Mississippi River into the Atchafalaya Basin during major floods.
