Check out my musical journey over the Morganza Spillway on May 16, 2011. At the time of this filming, 9 of the 125 gates are open. According to Wikipedia, The Morganza Spillway, a 3,900-foot (1,200 m) controlled spillway using a set of flood gates to control the volume of water entering the Morganza Floodway from the Mississippi River, consists of a concrete weir, two sluice gates, seventeen scour indicators, and 125 gated openings which can allow up to 600,000 cubic feet per second (17,000 m3/s) of water to be diverted from the Mississippi River into the Atchafalaya Basin during major floods.

Reporting on flooding along the Mississippi River and how it could affect people in many ways.
For a more contextual perspective on the flooding, I like this fine feature report by CNN’s Martin Savidge. It links the history of U.S. Highway 61 with the Mississippi River and much of the society wrapped around the two. Savidge stayed dry the entire time.

We start off going down the streets of St. Louis where people in the streets are doing things. We pass Sportsman’s Park where the Cardinals use to play before moving to Bush Stadium, then to new Bush Stadium. Then we see people waving some torn bed sheets around. Then we tour a street. We start floating down the Mississippi River where we see and a boat. Then we see this lady and she’s upset because her glasses are out of style. Then we see the chain of Rocks Bridge! Then we see only half of the Gateway Arch. Then we see the building of the Poplar St. Bridge. Then an old double Decker bridge. More half-arch then the Admiral riverboat. Then we head downtown for some goofy shots, fountains and old cars. Now we’re having a Bar-B-Q! This lady pets a grey cat, then smiles as the film ends.
