http://www.mda.state.mn.us Following the discovery of the destructive tree pest emerald ash borer (EAB) in a St. Paul neighborhood, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) will begin an intensive survey to determine the scope of the infestation in the metro area.
Over the course of several weeks, MDA Plant Protection Division staff will examine ash trees on public and private property in the affected St. Paul neighborhood northeast of the intersection of Highway 280 and Interstate 94. The survey will begin close to the initial infestation, and then expand to other potentially affected areas including northeast Minneapolis and the Mississippi River corridor near the University of Minnesota. MDA personnel will be joined by tree experts from partner agencies including the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and University of Minnesota Extension Service.

Nicollet Creek is the main inlet to Lake Itasca which is popularly acknowledged as the source of the Mississippi River in north central Minnesota. Were it not for a couple “disconnects” where the water flows underground, one would easily consider Nicollet Creek’s ultimate source to be Whipple Lake, about 2 miles upstream from Lake Itasca.
As the explorer and cartographer J. Nicollet (in 1836) followed this stream to Lake Itasca, he considered it an extension of the Mississippi River – calling it “the infant Mississippi” and “a cradled Hercules.” As a tribute to Nicollet, the creek was given his name as were three lakes along his route – designated Nicollet’s “Upper,” “Middle” and “Lower” Lakes.
This video includes how the Upper and Middle Lakes are connected by underground seepage. A good sequel to this video would show how Nicollet Creek flows uninterrupted from the Middle Lake (officially designated “Nicollet Lake” at the park) to Lake Itasca about a mile away, greatly resembling the Mississippi River where the latter stream leaves Lake Itasca and meanders through a swampy area.
This is pretty obscure historical & geographical stuff, but fascinating to a few folks nonetheless. And, from an examination of his Journals which were not published until 1970, Nicollet probably considered Whipple Lake as his upper lake.

This video was shot in Winona, Minnesota at Prairie Island Campground on the Mississippi River on July 29th, 2007. It has a Mega 15/16/3 Brushless Motor a with an e-Flight 40 amp brushless speed controller. The Prop is a Graupner 5.5″ x 4.3″ (14cm x 11cm)and spins at 19,000 RPM static. The battery is a MAX-AMPS Li-Po 3,000mAh @ 7.2 volts. With this set-up, the plane can easily fly over 45MPH (70KPH). I have flown the plane for 45 minutes continuously at about 1/3 throttle before having to land. I made the floats out of solid pink extruded foam and covered them with red Tyvek housewrap tape. I also sealed the canopy gaps with the Tyvek tape. Since this video, I have added velcro to the underside of the wing and to the top of the floats so that I can put them on and take them off with ease. I also added two vertical cooling tubes sticking up to keep the temps down inside the canopy. I have made new floats that are a little bigger and I should be able to take off from the water, not just land on the water. I will show that in a future video on You Tube.
