A short summary of a visit to the area around the St. Louis Arch in St. Louis Missouri.
Filmed on a Canon 60D with a Sigma 28mm Prime lens @24p. It was very sunny that day so I had to set aperture pretty low. Color corrected with Premiere Pro CS5.
Facts about the Arch:
The Gateway Arch is the tallest national monument in the United States at 630 feet.
Construction began February 12, 1963, and the last section of the Arch was put into place on October 28, 1965.
The Arch weighs 17,246 tons. Nine hundred tons of stainless steel was used to build the Arch, more than any other project in history.
The Arch was built at a cost of $13 million.

As the Mississippi River continues to rise in the US, land and homes along one of its main tributaries have been completely submerged.
The water level has reached 17.28 meters in the town of Vicksburg, obliterating a record set in 1927.
About 2.1 million acres were inundated in the state of Mississippi’s central region, as of Monday evening.
Due to a rainy spring, and heavy snow melts, the river has been rampaging across property in the states of Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas. The waterway is still surging, as it moves south through Mississippi and Louisiana.

As flooding continues along the Mississippi River, happy outcomes are hard to come by. There is one neighborhood in the South Vicksburg area of Mississippi, though, where five small businesses have joined forces and devised a plan to build their own levee. With a little ingenuity and determined spirit, they are fortifying an old raised railroad track along the river, hoping to keep the water out of their property and hundreds of homes in the surrounding area.

North Lake Tahoe River Rafting Offers Leisurely Float
07/01/2008

NORTH LAKE TAHOE RIVER RAFTING OFFERS LEISURELY FLOAT
STORY SUMMARY: (NORTH LAKE TAHOE, California/Nevada) — River rafting on the Truckee River has officially opened and summer fun is in full swing in North Lake Tahoe.
FOOTAGE DESCRIPTION: Footage includes shots of rafts and rafters on the Truckee river, taken June 30, 2008, plus soundbites (see below).
SUGGESTED COPY: Rafting season is underway as the gates of the Tahoe City Dam are open, releasing water from Lake Tahoe into the Truckee River and allowing commercial raft companies to recently open for business. Each summer, thousands of visitors make the popular three-mile float from Tahoe City to River Ranch Lodge at the base of Alpine Meadows Road, where lunch is served on the patio.
But rafting isn’t the only way to get wet. North Lake Tahoe also offers kayaking and canoeing on the country’s largest alpine lake, cruises aboard 50-foot sailboats and giant Mississippi sternwheelers, along with wake boarding and fishing charters.
Lake Tahoe was recently recognized as the #1 U.S. travel destination by TripAdvisor for 2008 (#10 in the world), and the #1 destination by Orbitz users for winter 2007-2008. Video about Giant Arbs and how fast they grow in the Landscape Thuja Green Giant arbs growth Rate see http://www.greengiantarbs.com for more about green giants and how fast they grow. We are Highland Hill farm of Fountainville Pa 18923 call us at 215 651 8329 The original Green Giant got its name not from ancient lore, but from unusually extra large, hence “giant,” green peas. These “Green Giant Peas” were introduced by the Minnesota Valley Canning Company in 1925, in contrast to their previously marketed LeSueur baby peas, early-picked in June. Founded in 1903, this pea company was located in the valley of the Minnesota River, the Dakota Sioux name for “cloudy water,” just southwest of Minneapolis and St. Paul, the state capital. This is where there’s a “confluence” with the even cloudier and muddier Mississippi River giving the whole area, including the surrounding towns like LeSueur, the title of “the Minnesota Valley.” Lesueur is the name of the original explorer of the area, a Frenchmen of the early 1700’s. By 1950, the “Jolly Green Giant” was so popular, such an “icon” as we say today, with a cartoon character created, etc., he became the basis of the company’s new name. So that is where Green Giant comes from, modern marketing, not ancient lore…
The Green Giant Arborvitae is more properly named by tree scientists the “Thuja Plicata,” with the other common historic names being, “giant cedar,” also “western cedar,” and “red cedar.” There’s only one other Arborvitae specie in all of North America, the “eastern cedar,” or “white cedar,” with “Thuja Occidentalis,” as the tree scientist’s Latin name, the botanist’s name. This short tree is actually what we usually think of when the “genus” juniper is mentioned.
Funny that the eastern cedar was given the Latin name for “west” which is “occidental.” You see? As I have observed before, what’s in a name? Highland Hill Farm is not located in a town called Highland Hills, or, on Highland Hill Road, etc. Scottish Highland Hills cows that we grazed on our first property provided our company with a distinctive name when we sold our first trees in 1978.
